On July 11, 2003, ACOA Minister Hon. Gerry Byrne announced a partnership with SABRI to build a $7.5 million state-of-the-art cold storage facility at St. Anthony. ACOA provided a $3 million interest free loan to SABRI to construct the facility and SABRI financed the additional funds.
Construction of the facility began in August of 2003. SABRI has entered into a lease operating agreement with St. Anthony Cold Storage, who brought with it the expertise of operating such a facility. Construction continued in 2004, employing excess of 25 people during the construction phase.
The cold storage accepted its first offshore vessel early in November of 2004 and continues to receive boats. Approximately 30 people are employed during the operation phase. SABRI's objective is to make St. Anthony the first stop for vessels leaving Europe and the last stop when vessels return to Europe.
In the Fall of 2005, EIMSKIP, an international container shipping company made its first stop in St. Anthony to pick up containers. Since that time EIMSKIP have made regular trips to St. Anthony when going to Europe.
